Problem Statement:

Some lead compounds found in drinking water are very toxic, leading to various illnesses and diseases.

Lead is one of the most dangerous contaminants in drinking water. Some lead compounds found in drinking water are very toxic, leading to various illnesses and diseases. This colorless, odorless, and tasteless metal can go undetected in water. Excessive amounts of lead place adults at higher risk for cancer, stroke, kidney disease, memory problems, and high blood pressure. Lead can cause seizures, hearing loss, behavioral problems, brain damage, learning disabilities, and a lower IQ level in children.

About the Innovation:

Young inventors from DiscoverSTEM designed a small but very effective system to quickly and easily detect lead and other impurities in water.

The innovation consists of a water chamber to put water to be tested and reactant capsules or pods that release minute quantities of reactants in the water, thus detecting the presence of lead and impurities.
