Drowsy driving ranks among the leading causes of freeway accidents, endangering countless lives. Shockingly, there existed no effective system to alert fellow drivers about the presence of a fatigued motorist on the road.

The data is alarming: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that drowsy driving contributes to an estimated 91,000 crashes annually in the United States alone. There was an urgent need for innovative technology and an alert system to mitigate the risks associated with tired drivers and enhance road safety for all.

About the Innovation:

Young innovators from DiscoverSTEM devised an ingeniously simple system to not only alert the drowsy driver but inform another driver in the vicinity about the presence of this drowsy driver.

The system tracks the alertness of the driver and if found drowsy, it not only raises an alarm but also relays a message to other drivers in the vicinity about the danger.
