Problem Statement:
This problem revolves around individuals afflicted with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).
It is a degenerative disease causing the loss of voluntary control over limbs, impaired breathing, and communication difficulties. ALS patients experience diminished quality of life and significant hurdles in daily living. The problem at its core is the urgent need for innovative solutions to assist and empower ALS patients in maintaining their independence and communication capabilities.
About the Innovation:
Young Inventors at DiscoverSTEM designed an intelligent system that tracks the eye movement of an ALS patient and converts it into complete sentences.
The system consists of a wearable glass or contact lens which is tracked on a compartmentalized screen. Each compartment of the screen has an object or cue that directly relates to the daily needs of the patient. When the patient looks at an object, the system converts it to audio sentences and relays the message to the caregiver, thus making it easier for an ALS patient to communicate about their daily needs.
